Giving came naturally to Marcella and Harvey Mashinter (pictured at right), and their legacy of leadership and generosity in the community of Longview is testament to this commitment to share their bounty with others.
Dedicated teachers – Harvey at Lower Columbia College and Marcella at Longview Public Schools – with wide ranging interests and a passion for travel, the Mashinters remained firmly rooted in their church and community when it came to giving back. And always, it was their extraordinary capacity to connect with others that guided how they nurtured the community they loved.
Harvey, who died in 2004, was revered as a role model and mentor, widely celebrated as “a moral compass” at the college and in the community. Marcella – warm, generous and humble – found numerous ways to reach out, including her work through her church to sponsor three families of “boat people” from South Vietnam.
The Mashinters’ devotion to the people of Longview will be remembered well into the future. Through their bequest, the Mashinters directed that their entire estate be used to create the Harvey J. and Marcella M. Mashinter Charitable Endowment. This fund will support scholarships and a broad range of community organizations, beautifully reflecting the open minds and hearts of a remarkable couple who, even in death, continue to teach us that giving has no bounds.
