Finding New Ways Forward

How Southwest Washington Nonprofits Are Navigating Federal Changes

Southwest Washington’s nonprofits are essential to the health of our communities.

Every day, these professionals strengthen our communities, providing everything from food and housing to education and healthcare. Now, much of the sector is having to re-write its own survival guide while continuing to address our community’s greatest needs.

To better understand how current conditions are influencing nonprofits in our region, the Community Foundation for Southwest Washington conducted a nonprofit landscape survey in September 2025. The report we published reflects what nonprofit leaders told us about the realities they are facing and what it means for our neighbors and neighborhoods.

Our president Matt Morton shares the truths that arose for him as he read through the report and how philanthropy can respond so we can move forward together.

Community Actions

Beyond the challenges, many respondents emphasized the importance of local action.
Immediate (0–6 months)
  • Share this report with neighbors, co-workers, friends and family.
  • Provide flexible, general operating support and commit to multi-year grants.
  • Ask nonprofit staff about their top challenges and how you can help.
  • Increase your volunteerism to provide immediate capacity support.
  • Make strategic connections within your networks to support nonprofits.
  • Participate in advocacy and awareness efforts to spread the word.
Strategic (6–18 months)
  • Support shared infrastructure to lower compliance costs and administrative burdens.
  • Invest in capacity-building efforts at small and grassroots organizations.
  • Fund policy engagement and legal support so nonprofits can effectively serve vulnerable populations, such as immigrants and people with disabilities.
