Chuck and Joyce Carter care about children. As they embarked on their philanthropic journey, they knew that they wanted to find a meaningful way to serve needy children in their community. To find the right fit for their investment, Chuck (pictured at right) turned to the Community Foundation’s Program Officer, Anne Digenis, to provide insights into the complex challenges facing children in our community.
Anne introduced Chuck to a variety of worthy programs, and one caught Chuck’s eye: the PRIDE for Kids playground improvement project at the Arc Family Center. As Arc staff described their dream of an outdoor playground specially designed for children with sensory and developmental disabilities, Chuck understood that this was the very stimulation needed to help these children learn to their potential.
The Carters contributed to the project through their Community Foundation Donor Advised Fund and their support didn’t stop there. Chuck accepted a central role in the fund-raising campaign, encouraged other family members to contribute to the project and has become a Board member.
“The beauty of philanthropy,” explains Anne Digenis, “is that it can be more than contributing money. For Chuck, it was also about his personal involvement in the project. Chuck and Joyce have become a testimonial for others to become engaged in the many rewards of giving.”
